Restoran Gim Cheng - Taman Daya, Johore Bahru

Pork Knuckles

 Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice
Carrot Cake
Pork Ribs

This morning, Dick & William went to JB for lunch. We decided to have dim sum and Dick suggested trying out this eatery which had very good reviews written by a local food blogger. Check out his comments of this place and other interesting eateries in Johore Bahru @ www.johorkaki.blogspot.sg

This place is about 15 minutes drive from JB via the EDL Highway.  We arrived at 11.45am. This corner coffee shop in a sleepy little town has a peaceful ambience, airy and complete with the sound of running water from a nearby drain. Most importantly, it's clean and no warplanes (houseflies) for you to practice your tai chi.

Traditional style pushcarts of dim sum came by our table and we ordered the above dishes. The quality of the food was fresh and surprisingly good. Most of the items have a succulent prawn stuffed in it. Both of us consumed a total of 13 dishes at the cost of Rm50 (S$20) which includes a pot of Chinese tea. Worth considering Round 2.

After lunch, we did some shopping at Holiday Plaza & Taman Sentosa before returning to Singapore.

Earth Jar Treasure Health Soup

Pots of soup kept in urn

 11 Varieties of soup

 Black Bean Pig's Tail Soup

Rice with Mushroom, Dried Shrimps & Cabbage

A friend of mine read about this unique eatery in the Sunday Times and recommended it to me.

Today, we took a bus to this eatery at 77 Eating House, Block 22 Sin Ming Road. There are four coffee shops along this block.

We arrived there at 11am and I settled for the above Black Bean Pig's Tail Soup. I was pleasantly surprised by the soup. It tasted just like those my grandmother used to cook in the 1960's, except for the lack of sliced chye poh. The generous pieces of pig's tail, black beans, black eye peas & herbs made the soup very satisfying. One pot contains about 3.5 rice bowls of soup.

We wanted to try the Teochew Char Kway Teow in the same coffee shop but our tanks were full. Besides this soup stall, the Braised Duck & Mixed Vegetable Rice stalls also have long queues.

The coffee shop a few doors away has a famous Bak-Kut-Teh stall & Ah Or Seafood from Ellenborough Market @ Merchant Road.

Restoran Kah Kah Loke "Found It At Last"

The restoran @ 130 Jalan Sutera Tanjung, 8/3 Taman Sutera Utama, Johore

 Bitter Gourd Soup (Rm9)

 Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves (Rm7)

Beancurd with Minced Meat in Bean Paste

Hakka Steamed Pork with Belly & Yam (Rm7)

Kah Kah Loke Deep Fried Pork (Rm6)

This morning Dick, Phillip and William went to Taman Sutera in Skudai, Johore. We were caught in the heavy traffic at the Causeway for more than an hour. By the time we cleared CIQ, it was slightly past 11.30am. The 20 minutes or so drive to our destination was smooth & pleasant. This eatery is situated next to the Sutera Mall.

We arrived feeling like hungry ghosts with heavy bladders. Made a bee line for the restoran's toilet before settling down to order from the simple menu. Had the above five dishes and ate to our hearts' content. Needless to say more, the photo of the empty dishes speaks for itself.
Total bill plus drinks was Rm46 (S$19).

After lunch, we past our time at Carrefour Supermarket @ Sutera Mall before returning back to JB. Stopped by Holiday Plaza, bought Dolly Parton Pau and Interpharm for supply of medicine before returning back to Singapore at 4.30pm. Once again, was caught in the heavy traffic at Causeway and only managed to clear Singapore Customs by 5.45pm.

As it was too late for Phillip to return home to get his car, Dick offered to fetch Monica directly. After picking her from Jalan Bukit Merah at 6.10pm, they dropped me at Tiong Bahru Plaza to drive my daughter's car home.

It was a fun day we had and longed for many more such outings to come.

Supposed hunt for Bitter Gourd (Kou Kway) Soup in Taman Johor Jaya.

Restoran Kah Kah Hoe

Philip and myself decided to hunt for Restoran Kah  Kah Loke which was located at 62 Jalan Bakawali 39 in Taman Johor Jaya. When we reached there the shop was closed. Desperate for Bitter Gourd Soup, we drove around hoping that they had moved to somewhere nearby. After an hour of driving and disappointed, we gave up hope and decided to go to nearby Tebrau City instead.

At this time, we were very hungry. We stopped by Arashi Shabu Shabu Japanese Restuarant. Phillip ordered Saba  Fish Teppanyaki set (RM23.90) while I had Chicken Teppanyaki set. (RM21.90).     For drinks we had Rose Lover Flower Tea (See pix).

Rose Lover Flower Tea

After lunch, we went shopping at AEON Supermart and I bought myself a pair of golf shoe (Head) for RM 129 about S$53.

At tea time, we decided to have coffee at Sweet Recipe. Ended up sharing Chocolate Banana and Tiramisu Cake with Phillip with Long Black Coffee.

Made our way back early as we expected some heavy traffic at CIQ of both end because of the school holidays. Surprisingly, we took only 30 minutes from Tebrau City to Singapore CIQ.

Although a disappointment for not having the long waited Bitter Gourd Soup, we had a good day out. I did some research on the "lost" Restuarant Kah Kah Loke and found that they are now operating at 130 Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/3 near Sutera Mall off Jalan Skudai. Closed on Mondays. Check out later for our report on Restuarant Kah Kah Loke next week.

The Yaukwees, Dick, Thomas, Richard, Phillip & William left for Skudai at 10am for dim sum lunch at Chaw Yuan. Upon arriving, we found that they close on every Wednesday. What luck!

Dick suggested we go to Sutera Mall nearby. We found this restaurant serving Shabu Shabu and the price was reasonable (see menu above). What's more, it's 1 for 1 on weekdays! Since there were only 5 of us, we ordered 6 sets. Check out the total bill. It amounted to less than S$7 per pax.

After enjoying the healthy & tasty lunch, we went shopping at Carrefour. Had coffee @ Starocks Cafe located within the mall. Coffee ordered comes complete with chicken nuggets or sausage snacks.

We headed back to Singapore just before 3pm and it was smooth sailing at the Causeway. Another foodful & fun day.
