Babas Peranakan @ Chinatown Complex Food Center

Assam Fish Head
Sambal Goreng
Sayur Lemak
Fried Onion Omelette
My makan kaki and I decided to have something spicy for lunch today. We met at Chinatown Complex and was walking around to find some spicy food to tickle our palate. This was the first stall we saw but decided to complete our round of the food center and decide on the best choice.

We came back to Babas Peranakan. The choice of food was appetizing and the owner, Edwin Tan, was a very pleasant middle age man. Image projection is very important too. It helps in getting the patrons to decide.

We ordered an Assam Fish Head ($4), Sambal Goreng ($1.50), Sayur Lemak ($1.50), Fried Onion Omelette ($1) and two plates of rice drowned in sayur lemak & assam curry with sambal blachan. ($0.50 x 2) Quality of the dishes was very tasty. Price, very cheap @ only $9 for the two of us. How to complain???

Steamboat Lunch @ Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant

Had steamboat lunch today at this steamboat restaurant along Joo Chiat Road with my wife, daughter & her boyfriend. This place was discovered by my daughter's boss sometime back and they ate there frequently ever since.

We ordered raw fish kway teow, squid paste, kiaw and pork belly to go with the steamboat. An ala-carte dish of deep fried toufu with Thai Chilli. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pig knuckle. It was so well done. The meat was succulent and tender, bone cartilage really soft and the skin was super crunchy. Shiok lah!

Don't ask me the damage. I only know the plate of pig knuckle cost $25.

That's the size of each crab!

The bottle of Sparkling Sake Joe brought
Today, Thursday, was another day of gastronomical for us yaukwees. It started at 9am. Phillip fetched me from home and he parked his car at Tampines IKEA. We took SBS #168 to Woodlands Interchange and MRT to Kranji MRT Station. Richard met us there. He took SBS #170 from Bukit Timah Road outside Coronation Plaza. To get to the bus stop, he had to walk 15 minutes to the main road from his home and arrived all sweaty. Where else it was just a stone throw away for Phillip and me.

From Kranji MRT Station, we took SBS #170 (Blue Plate), which plies between Kranji MRT Station and Kota Raya in JB. Our stomachs were already singing Majullah Singapura before we arrived at the Causeway. After clearing Malaysian Customs, we made a beeline for Kim Loong Restaurant along Jalan Meldrum. Ordered a pack of braised mixture consisting of belly pork & skin, duck's liver & gizzards. Also a plate of crispy tau kee & tau kua from the stall beside. All of which were from a coffeeshop across the road.

At Kim Loong, we ordered a large claypot of Ang KoLi curry fish head to go with what we bought across the road, Killing three birds with one stone. As good patrons, we cleared our packed food and threw the wrappers outside, into a bin, of course!

Large Fish Head & Rice: Rm31
Braised Mixture: Rm10
Crispies: Rm 4.20
Drinks: Rm5.40

We did not want to overeat bearing in mind we gonna have Crab Party at Thomas' place after we returned from JB.

Needed a good walk to digest the food, we walked to Kota Raya Mall. I bought some stuff at UO Super Store and we walked to InterPharm to buy medication. Richard wanted body massage and satisfied his craving in City Square while Phillip and I had ice kachang while waiting for him at the food court. Made our way back to Singapore at 3.30pm. Collected Phillip's car from Tampines IKEA and was at Thomas' place by 5.30pm.

Eric Lim and Joe Bong were already there. Richard arrived by 6pm. Thomas cooked corn beef Angel Hair Spaghetti. That was his first try. Though he forgot to add salt, it tasted almost perfect. Mixed with some Gimson Nonya Sauce, it tasted out of this world. A dish that I want to try soon. Following this dish, we had six huge steamed crabs. One for each of us. We had fresh lime juice, and a bottle of Sake, with compliments from Joe Bong.

Had a good old time chat and called it a nite at 10pm.

Bismillah Briyani Restaurant

Thomas Tan initiated today's gathering at Bismillah Briyani Restaurant. Thomas Tan, Phillip Lim, Richard Lim, Eric Lim, Joseph Bong and myself met at the restaurant around 11.30am.

Richard & Eric had Chicken Briyani and the rest, Mutton Briyani. The basmati rice was nicely cooked and fluffy with plenty of masala on top. Buried under the rice are two pieces of tender chunks of mutton, potatoes and a hard boil egg. It was not necessary to add curry onto the rice as it is flavorful on its own. A small dish of Raita (garlic yoghurt) was served with each plate of briyani. It blends very well with the rice. On top of all these, there was a free flow of papad (indian crackers).

As if not enough, Thomas ordered another six pieces of grilled chicken parts. Pleasantly quite unique in taste. We also had their special dessert made from fresh milk. Total bill: $74.50 inclusive of drinks.

After our hearty meal, we walked to The Verge Shopping Mall to cool down and had teh tarek at Banquet Food Court.

A Day at Ang Mo Kio

Woke up to find my 5 months old iPhone4 hanged. Met MK Kenny @ AMK Hub and headed for the SingTel Hello Shop there. The lady at the counter swiftly checked my phone and changed the SIM Card free of charge.

Headed for R R Indian Food Stall in a coffeeshop at Block 252 AMK Street 21. A queue had already formed by the time we reached there. Joined the queue and ordered the above food. The rojak was fresh and crispy but the gravy is a little disappointing. However, better than other places. Still think the one at S11 at Tampines Central is the best. The mutton briyani was a pleasant surprise. The basmati rice was quite fragrant and good to taste on its own. The piece of mutton I had was succulent and very soft. However, the portion was too small for $5.

After the light and hearty lunch, while walking back to AMK Central, came across a stall selling pre-packed durians. Some $2 a box, some $5 a box. The man sold us the $2 ones @ $5 for 3 boxes. Armed with the durians, we went to the hawker center nearby to gasak. Had iced jelly after that and continued our walk back to AMK Central where I took a bus home at 4pm.

Day's Outing @ JB with 5 Yaukwees

Pig Ears & Onion Egg Omelette
Braised Wild Boar Meat
Snake Soup
Cereal Prawns
Steamed Patin Fish with Bean Paste
Steamed Patin Fish Hong Kong Style

The day started with the five Yaukwees, Dick Lee, Phillip Lim, Richard Lim & myself meeting at Thomas Tan's place. Dick was the driver and Richard, the vehicle commander. Cleared Malaysian Customs by 10.45 and we decided to go for a late breakfast as it was too early for lunch. We went to Restoran New Country, the usual breakfast stopover for Dick, Richard & Phillip during their regular golf trips in Johor. We had noodles, pig ears & onion egg omelette.

Drove over to Johor Country Club as Dick wanted to check out the golf course before going to Qui Lin Restoran along Jalan Maju, next to Pelangi Plaza for lunch. Ordered Wild Boar Meat, Snake Soup, Cereal Prawns & two Patin Fish, one steamed Hong Kong Style and the other with Bean Paste.

After lunch, went over to My Pharmacy at Taman Sentosa where Dick bought some medicine. Nearby, Richard, Thomas and myself bought more food, Emperor Chicken, Big Pau and Mutton & Beef Rendang to bring back to Singapore.

Next, we headed to City Square in town. Had coffee and big pau at Robin's before going to our regular pharmacy, InterPharm, to purchase our regular medicine. Back to City Square to buy more tit bits and stuff at supermarket before returning to Singapore.

Dropped Richard and Thomas off and the three of us went to Tampines IKEA for some drinks before returning home. It was indeed an enjoyable day for all of us!

Kong Kee Seafood Restaurant & Norris Road Chepati

It was a foodful day I had with Phillip Lim. Started off the day with coffee at Bedok before making our way to Kong Kee Seafood Restaurant @ 611-613 Lorong 31 Geylang.

As we have plans to eat other food in town, we just ordered their much talked about Traditional KL Hokkien Mee. I asked to see their noodles to ensure that they are not using udon instead of yellow noodles. They readily obliged, the Manager, Dora Ooi, assured us that their noodles as well as the sauce are imported from Kuala Lumpur as they could not get them locally. She also asked us to be a little patient as it would take time to steam the noodles with slow fire.

The dish was served within fifteen minutes. The texture of the noodles was just right with some slices of pork and a couple of fresh prawns. The sauce used was not too sweet and the sambal that comes with the dish complements the noodles very well. Price: S$5

Ordered tulang kambing and mixed cabbage & cauliflower. Phillip was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the thick curry. Total: S$5.50
