Makan Mission @ Geylang Serai

Phillip & I started the day at 10.30 with some samosa and teh tarek from a sarabat stall at this food center. At 11.30, our stomach was giving us the signal and Phillip joined the queue at this nasi padang stall. Meanwhile, I went downstairs to buy a cooked salted egg @ 40 cents. We ordered sambal goreng, fried chicken liver, beef rendang & ikan bakar. She gave us a generous serve of sambal, chicken curry & asam pedas. It was a satisfying meal. Both of us "Suffered Happily".

Next, we went to Changi Village. Recommended Phillip a free & legal parking area and we took a nice 10 minutes stroll to the hawker center for teh alia. We arrived just in time as it started to rain heavily. After the rain we were still feeling full as we intended to stuff ourselves with BBQ Chicken Wings. So we took a stroll at the beach to digest the nasi. That did not help. At least we have reason to go back to Changi Village again next week.

The Masala Hut

We, The Four Yaukwees, Richard Lim, Dick Lee, Philip Lim & myself had another gastronomical day @ Little India today.

Dick, Philip & I met at Tampines MRT Station around 10 this morning. We proceeded to the bus interchange to board SBS bus #23. It was a pleasant half hour ride through Bedok Reservoir, PIE, Bendemeer Road, Jalan Besar, Bukit Timah Road before turning right into Serangoon Road to make its return route. We alighted at Tekka Hawker Center and had a leisurely stroll to Chander Road, taking in the sights of Little India and its smell.

Like yaukwees, we were the first customers to arrive at The Masala Hut. The staff were still preparing the food and cleaners getting the place ready for business. Then, at precisely 11.35, Richard arrived and we started our meal. Had curry fish head, Masala Mutton & Scrambled Fish and Eggs.

After our hearty meal, all four of us looked like pregnant women going to give birth. No doubt, we were walking like one too. To help digest our sinful meal, we strolled to Mustafa, then to Sungei Road (Thief's Market) & Sim Lim Square. There, we met William Chin and had coffee at the basement foodcourt.

At 4pm, it was time to gasak again. Went over to Rochore Center Food Center for drinks & Waterloo Street Mee Siam. Made our way home via MRT @ 5pm.

Met Philip at Simei and took train to Outram. Dick joined us from Tanah Merah. Richard met us at New Bridge Center and we started our gastronomical day at Chinatown Smith Street Food Center. Unfortunately, Dick has to empty his bowels of the previous day's left over enroute to Chinatown.

Started the day with raw fish as appetizer. By 11.30am, a queue was formed at the stall selling steamed herbal soup. Philip & Dick joined the queue which will only start serving their first order at 12noon sharp. Each of us had a bowl of Buddha Jump Over the Wall at an economical price of just $6 (Value for Money lah). Had the herbal soup with a steamed Song Her Tau at just $13. All four of us ended the meal with pregnant women.

At Yue Hwa Departmental Store, Dick wanted to cool down but ended up buying 2 shirts. How that happened is up to you to find out.

Had tea break and planned our next Gasak Day at People's Park Centre. Anyone interested to join us is most welcome!

My Makan Kakis

This all started when 3 of us, classmates at St Michael's School in the sixties started to gather at the finest food joints in Singapore and Malaysia, Phillip with William (both Lims) and myself.

Our first venture was initiated by William. He brought us to go to Johor Baru by bus and train. All three met at Tampines MRT one morning to board Bus 168 and headed to Woodlands Interchange. We then took Bus 950 to CIQ in Johor Baru. When we reached City Square in Jalan Wong Ah Fook, it started to rain so we went to William's pharmacy to borrow umbrellas. We headed to our first stop, Fish Head curry. Yes, one big bowl (RM18) each. That's for lunch.

What's next? Coffee Black with Portugese egg tarts. Time for some shopping.... Feeling restless, we went for a cinema show, "Grown Up". A time meant for sleeping under a cool air-conditioned space turns out to be a hour and half of comedic actions.

It's time for food again and we went to William's favourite "Indian mutton soup", very similar to SJI's Waterloo Street in the late sixties when we were schooling as Josephians.

It was time to go home but we promised more of such "makan" ventures. Continue to watch this blog...........
